Identification, morale, and subdued are not the same patch.
They get confused constantly, and they pull the design in opposite directions. Worth deciding which one you are actually ordering.
Unit and team identifiers
Designators, team names, and role markers. Legibility is the whole job, so contrast stays high and type stays large enough to read across a room.
Morale patches
Humour, mascots, in-jokes, deployment marks. Design freedom is the point. Bold color, unusual die-cut shapes, and often the most detailed artwork of the three.
Subdued and low-visibility
Deliberately low contrast against the uniform. The hardest to get right, because a design that goes too flat stops reading as anything at all.
Low contrast still has to read.
A subdued patch is not just the same artwork in green. Take a design built on strong color separation, flatten it to three close tones, and the shapes that carried the design disappear. The elements that were doing the work were the color jumps, and they are gone.
What survives is structure: outline weight, shape silhouette, and a deliberate one or two steps of tonal separation between neighboring areas. We specify those steps as Pantone codes that sit close but not identical, and the proof shows you exactly what that looks like before anything is stitched. If a design has gone too flat to read at its finished size, we say so at the mockup stage rather than shipping 200 pieces of mud.
Thread coverage matters here too. A subdued patch at 100% coverage reads as a solid tonal block with texture doing the work, which is often the desired effect and adds 18%. At our 75% default some twill shows through, which changes the tone slightly. Worth deciding deliberately rather than defaulting.
The velcro question, answered properly.
Hook-and-loop is the default for anything going on a carrier, pack, or sleeve field, because the patch has to come off. What we manufacture onto the patch is the hook side. The loop field is already sewn onto most gear, so it is not something we supply with the order. The backing guide covers all three options in detail.

Thread, weave, or rubber.
Embroidered as the default
Raised thread, merrowed edge, and the texture most people expect from a unit or morale patch. Handles bold shapes and confident lettering well.
Woven for dense designators
Long unit designators, small alphanumerics, and fine internal detail hold far better on a loom than they do in embroidery thread.
PVC for the weather
Solid molded rubber, fully waterproof, wipes clean instead of laundering. The right answer when a patch lives outdoors permanently.
What size to order.
Sizes run 2 × 2, 3 × 3, 4 × 4, 5 × 5, and 7 × 7 inches, and pricing follows the finished size selected at quoting. For a non-standard shape, send the finished width and height and we confirm the right size before production. Larger pieces are quoted by hand.

What does a subdued patch actually mean in production terms?+
It means picking thread colors with very little contrast against each other and against the uniform, typically greens, tans, greys, and black rather than bright color. The design still needs some tonal separation or it reads as a solid blob at arm's length. We work that out on the proof by specifying Pantone codes that sit close together but not identical, and we will tell you if a design has gone too flat to read.
Does velcro backing come with the loop side?+
No. The +$0.55 per patch covers the hook side bonded to the back of the patch, which is the part that has to be manufactured onto it. The loop side is the field already sewn onto most carriers, packs, and sleeves, so most buyers do not need it supplied. If your gear has no loop field, that is sourced separately.
Morale patches are usually small runs. How does that work with a 50-piece minimum?+
The minimum is 50 pieces per design, not per order, and that is the honest floor where the per-piece price stops being punitive. A morale design at 50 pieces is entirely normal. What does not work is 10 pieces of five different designs, since each design carries its own setup. Teams usually pick the one or two designs they actually want and run a proper batch.
Will an embroidered patch survive being outdoors for months?+
Embroidered thread is dyed through rather than printed, so it holds color far better than anything surface-printed, and a merrowed edge stops it fraying. Sustained sun and abrasion will still soften a stitched patch over a long deployment outdoors. If the patch is going to live in the weather permanently, PVC is the more durable answer because it is solid rubber and wipes clean.

What we will not do is produce insignia intended to misrepresent someone as a member of a unit or service they do not belong to, or reproduce protected marks without permission from the holder.
