Motorcycle back patch size and rocker sizing guide

Most back patch problems are measuring problems. The artwork was approved against a number someone guessed, and the finished set arrives too wide for the vest or too tall to clear the waistband. This is how to get the numbers right before anyone draws anything.

The short answer

There is no universal back patch size. Measure the usable back panel of the actual garment, subtract the clearance you want at the seams, and size the pieces to what is left. Sets we quote commonly run 10 to 12 inches at the widest piece, but that is a range we see, not a standard to design to.

This guide covers manufacturing and layout only. Wording, club identifiers and who wears which configuration are matters for your own organization, and they are addressed briefly further down.

1. Measure the panel, not the person

Vest sizing is not patch sizing. Two vests labelled the same size from different makers can differ by more than an inch across the back, and a cut with a yoke seam loses usable height that the label never mentions. Work from the garment in front of you.

Lay the vest flat, face down, and smooth the back panel. Then take two numbers:

  • Usable width: the flat distance between the two side seams, at the widest point the patch will actually occupy.
  • Usable height: from below the collar or yoke seam down to the top of the waistband or hem.

Then subtract anything in the way. Patches sit badly across a seam, and worse across hardware. Check for a yoke seam across the upper back, a center back seam, vents, laces or side adjusters, concealed-carry pocket stitching, armour pockets, and any panel join. If a vest has a center back seam, a single wide piece spanning it will never lie perfectly flat, and that is a design decision to make deliberately rather than discover later.

If the set is going on more than one vest, measure the smallest garment in the group. A set sized to the largest member fits nobody else.

2. How the pieces divide the space

A three-piece set is not three independent decisions. Top rocker, center and bottom rocker share one height budget, and the two gaps between them are part of that budget. Get the gaps wrong and the set reads as one crowded block once it is sewn down.

Width is usually decided by the rockers. They frame the center, so they define the outer span of the whole set, which means your panel width limits the rockers first and the center is sized to sit within them. On our own floor, the rockers we produce for full sets are commonly 12 inches across with centers in the 5 inch range, which gives a sense of the proportion rather than a rule to copy.

3. Real pieces, for scale

These are sizes from pieces we have actually produced, published on our biker and MC page. Treat them as starting points for a conversation, not as standards. Your panel decides.

4. What changes on a very small or very large vest

On a small panel the first thing to go is the gap, and that is the wrong thing to sacrifice. When height is tight, the honest choices are a shallower rocker, a smaller center, or dropping to a two-piece arrangement rather than squeezing three pieces into space for two. A set with no visible separation stops reading as a set.

On a large panel the temptation is to scale everything up proportionally, which tends to produce a center that overwhelms the rockers. Width is also not free: past a certain span a single piece has to be produced and handled as one large panel, which is part of why back patches are hand-quoted rather than priced from a table.

5. Embroidery limits that only appear at this scale

A design that works at 3 inches does not automatically work at 12, and the failure modes run in both directions.

Stitch count and machine time

Stitch count is what drives production time. For scale, our standard sizes run about 10,000 stitches at 2 inches, 17,500 at 3 inches and 30,000 at 4 × 4. A full back piece is in a different category again, which is the practical reason it is quoted individually rather than from a rate card.

Detail does not scale up cleanly

Enlarging artwork enlarges its flaws. Thin lines that read as crisp at small size become noticeably heavy strips of satin stitch at back-patch scale, and fine internal detail that was charming small can look busy large. Bold shapes and clear silhouettes are what carry across a back panel, which is the same logic set out in how to design a custom patch.

Coverage and weight

Thread coverage is how much of the twill is filled. Our default is 75%. Taking a large piece to 100% coverage produces a denser, heavier patch and adds 18%, and on something the size of a back panel that weight is genuinely noticeable on the garment. It is a deliberate choice, not a default to accept.

Border, and the area it takes

The border sits inside the finished dimension, so the artwork area is always smaller than the size you order. We confirm the exact usable area on your proof rather than asking you to guess it.

A merrowed edge, the rolled thread border, is standard on our work and is what stops a back patch fraying under road wind. For outlines a merrow machine cannot follow, we finish with a stitched satin border instead, which seals the edge the same way and allows sharper shapes. Either way the border occupies part of the finished dimension, so plan the artwork against the inner area rather than the ordered size.

When to move a piece to woven

Embroidery is the right build for the structural pieces of a back set. Where it struggles is dense small text, and a long club name compressed into a narrow arc is exactly that case. Woven holds finer lettering because the threads are far finer, at the cost of the raised texture that makes embroidered patches feel like a back patch. Plenty of sets mix the two. 6. One-piece, two-piece and three-piece

These are different manufacturing jobs, not just different layouts.

  • One-piece. A single patch carrying everything. One design record, one stitch file, one application. Easiest to keep consistent across a group and easiest to apply straight.
  • Two-piece. Commonly a center with a single rocker. Useful when panel height will not carry three pieces with honest gaps.
  • Three-piece. Top rocker, center and bottom rocker as separate patches. Three records and three applications, and the alignment burden moves to whoever sews them on.

One practical consequence: separate pieces have to be applied square to each other. If the set is going onto many vests by different hands, a one-piece build removes that variable entirely.

7. What to send us

A back patch quote moves fastest when the measurements arrive with the artwork. Include:

  • Usable panel width and height, and which garment you measured.
  • Whether the panel has a center back seam, yoke seam, vents, or pockets in the way.
  • The pieces you need: back center, top and bottom rockers, side rockers, rank patches, chapter markers.
  • Quantity, and whether every member's vest is the same size.
  • Artwork in any form, plus your colors if you already have Pantone references.

Common questions

Is there a standard back patch size?+

No, and anyone who gives you one number is guessing. The limit is the garment: a slim women's cut vest and a 3XL men's cut do not have the same usable panel, so the same set cannot fit both. What is reasonably consistent is the range. Back patch sets we quote usually land somewhere between 10 and 12 inches across at the widest piece, which is why our own quote form asks for the back patch size in that range. Measure your panel and work inward from it.

Should the rockers be the same width as the center patch?+

Usually the rockers are wider, not equal. The rockers frame the center, so they tend to define the outer width of the whole set while the center sits inside that span. That means panel width limits your rockers first, and the center is sized to sit comfortably within them. The exception is a one-piece back patch, where a single shape carries everything and there is nothing to frame.

How small can lettering go on a rocker before it stops reading?+

As a working rule we use across all embroidered work, lettering reads well down to about a quarter inch tall, and below that it starts closing up. A rocker is usually the safest place for text on the whole set because the piece is wide, so letters can be generous. The risk is the opposite one: cramming a long club name and a chapter into a narrow arc forces the type down until it blurs. If the name is long, the honest options are a wider rocker, a shorter wording, or switching that piece to woven.

Does the merrowed border eat into my design area?+

Yes. The border sits inside the finished dimension, so the artwork area is always smaller than the size you order. It matters most on rockers, where the piece is shallow and the border consumes a meaningful share of the height. Can I price a back patch in the instant calculator?+
