Yes, AI artwork can become a great patch, and it does not need to be production-ready when you send it. It is rarely made straight from the image: for thread and molded patches we redraw it into clean shapes, rebuild any lettering, choose a set of colors that will reproduce well, and simplify the detail to suit the size. Printed patches keep much more of the original. There is no setup fee for the artwork. Once your deposit starts the order, a Digital Mockup is included, with unlimited mockup revisions, and you approve one real Production Proof patch before we make the rest.
Why an AI image is not ready to stitch as it is
An AI image is a grid of pixels designed to look good on a screen. A patch is built from physical materials: rows of thread, woven threads, or blocks of molded rubber. Those materials form clean shapes in a set number of colors, so a few things that are easy for an AI tool are hard to reproduce as they are:
- Light effects. Glow, haze, and lens flare are made of soft, semi-transparent pixels that thread cannot copy directly.
- Texture. Painterly brush strokes and film grain look rich on screen but can turn to noise at patch size.
- Invented detail. AI tools often add tiny ornaments, fine hair, and background figures that can be smaller than a stitch.
- Lettering. Text often comes out misshapen, unevenly spaced, or misspelled.
- Color count. A single AI image can hold thousands of slightly different shades.
None of this is a problem, and you do not need to fix any of it before you send it. Your AI image does not need to be production-ready. It is a starting point for the artwork rather than the artwork itself, and turning it into production art is our job.
What we do with your AI artwork
We treat your AI image the same way we treat a sketch or a photo of a drawing: as a clear picture of what you want. Then we rebuild it for production.
- Redraw the shapes. Clean outlines and solid areas replace soft edges and texture, keeping the character of the design.
- Rebuild the lettering. Text is reset in a real typeface that matches the style, spelled from what you tell us, not from the image.
- Choose the colors. For thread and molded patches, we pick the handful of colors that carry the design. On embroidered and woven patches, thread colors are matched to Pantone (PMS) references as closely as thread allows.
- Simplify for the size. We keep the details that read at your finished size and merge or remove the ones that would blur.
For embroidered patches, the approved artwork is then digitized into a stitch file. Artwork setup, including digitizing, is included in the per-patch price with no setup fee.
From AI image to patch, element by element
Here is what typically happens to each part of an AI image on a thread or molded patch. Printed patches keep much more of the original, which the next section covers.
| In the AI image | On the patch |
|---|---|
| Soft glow, light rays, lens flare | Dropped, or turned into a solid outline or band of color |
| Smooth gradients and shading | A few solid tones that suggest the shading |
| Painterly texture, grain, brush strokes | Clean, flat shapes with crisp edges |
| Thousands of subtly different shades | A handful of solid colors, matched to Pantone references on embroidered and woven |
| Misshapen or misspelled lettering | Rebuilt in a real typeface, spelled the way you tell us |
| Busy background scenery | Removed, or simplified into a background color |
| Tiny invented details | Merged or simplified so the main shapes stay sharp |
| Uneven sides, warped or melted edges | Cleaned up and made consistent |
What survives, by patch type
The patch type decides how much of the AI look carries over. The more your design depends on soft shading and color blends, the more a printed finish makes sense. For a full rundown of each type, see types of custom patches, and for the two thread options side by side, see embroidered vs woven.
| Patch type | Keeps | Changes | Good fit when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Embroidered | Bold shapes, outlines, solid color areas, and a raised stitched texture. | Gradients and glow usually become solid tones. Fine texture and very small text are often simplified. | The art is a logo, emblem, or badge built from bold shapes. |
| Woven | Finer lines, smaller lettering, and more intricate shapes on a flat, smooth surface. | Subtle blends are possible, but it is still built from thread colors, so photo-style shading is simplified. | The design is detailed or text-heavy, or the patch is small. |
| PVC | Solid blocks of color, optional raised relief, and a durable, weather-resistant finish. | Gradients usually become solid blocks. Very fine detail is often kept flat or simplified. | Bold, graphic art for outdoor or rugged gear. |
| UV printed PVC | Gradients, shading, and fine detail, printed onto a molded rubber base. | Much less than molded PVC. Detail still has to suit the finished size. | The soft shading and color blends are the point, and you want rubber. |
| Printed (dye-sublimated) | Photo-level detail, smooth gradients, and full color, printed onto fabric. | A flat finish with no raised texture. Quoted by hand rather than in the calculator. | You want the patch as close to the AI image as possible. |
Size changes everything
An AI image is made to fill a screen. A patch is often only a few inches across, and every element has to be big enough for thread or rubber to form it. Details that look crisp on a monitor, like thin lines, small text, and distant background figures, can merge or disappear at patch size.
So the smaller the patch, the more we simplify. If a detail really matters to you, there are two ways to keep it: make the patch larger, or choose a patch type that holds finer detail, like woven or a printed finish. Our patch size and placement guide covers the common sizes for hats, chests, sleeves, and backs.
Colors: from thousands of shades to a few
AI tools create light and depth with thousands of subtly different shades. A thread or molded patch is built from a set number of colors, so we choose the ones that carry your design. On embroidered and woven patches, thread colors are matched to Pantone (PMS) references as closely as thread allows. PVC color is mixed into the rubber, so it is usually matched from your artwork and confirmed on your Production Proof. As a design rule of thumb, most great-looking patches use three to six colors. That is a guideline, not a production limit: there is no hard cap, but fewer, bolder colors read better from a distance.
On embroidered and standard PVC patches, glow and gradients usually become solid bands of color, and woven can hold subtle blends. If smooth blends are the heart of the design, UV printed PVC and printed patches keep them.
Every screen shows color a little differently, and AI images often lean on glowing, saturated color that looks different from one screen to the next. Your Production Proof is the real color check: it is an actual patch, and for embroidered and woven patches it lists the Pantone references the thread colors are matched to. You confirm it before we make the rest. Even a photo can show color slightly differently from the patch in hand.
Why AI lettering gets rebuilt
AI image tools are getting better with text, but lettering still often comes out with odd letterforms, uneven spacing, or invented words. We rebuild it in a real typeface that matches the style, and we spell it from what you type to us, not from the image. Always include your exact wording with your order, and tell us if you have a specific font in mind.
Lettering also needs room. As a general guide, embroidered lettering reads well down to about a quarter inch tall, depending on the font and the design. For smaller text, woven can usually hold finer lettering, or the patch can go bigger. Our how to design a custom patch guide has more on keeping text legible.
Before you send your AI artwork
- Send the original download. The largest file the tool gives you, not a screenshot or a copy forwarded through a messaging app.
- Type out your text. Include the exact wording and spelling in your message.
- Name the size and type. Tell us the finished size and the patch type you have in mind, or ask us which suits the art.
- Say what matters most. Point out the two or three elements that must survive, so we know what to protect when we simplify.
- Mention the background. Tell us whether the scenery behind your design belongs on the patch or should go.
- Share any colors you need. Brand colors or Pantone codes, if you have them.
- Check it is original. Make sure it does not closely resemble an existing logo, mascot, or character.

Who owns an AI-generated design?
In the US, current Copyright Office guidance is that images generated by AI from a prompt alone are generally not protected by copyright, because copyright requires a human author. Your own creative contributions, like editing, redrawing, or arranging elements, may be protected, depending on how much you added. A logo used to identify your business, team, or club may still be able to work as a trademark, depending on how it is used and how distinctive it is, whether or not the artwork itself is protected by copyright.
Two practical points. AI tools can produce something close to an existing logo or character, so look carefully before you build a brand on it. And we do not produce designs that copy someone else's trademark without written permission from the trademark holder. These rules are still developing and vary by country, so treat this section as general information, not legal advice. For anything that matters to your business, ask an attorney.
How it works from here
- Price it, send your image, and start your order. Get your price, upload the AI image with your notes, and pay the deposit to start your order. Printed patches start with a custom quote.
- Digital Mockup, included. Within 24 hours of your order, you get the redrawn design to review at its finished dimensions, with unlimited mockup revisions until it is right.
- Production Proof. Once you approve the mockup, we make one real patch and send you photos of it.
- You approve, then we make the rest. Your approval locks the design and saves it so reorders start from it. We make the rest of your order once the balance is paid.

Can you make a patch from an AI-generated image?+
Yes. Artwork from ChatGPT, Midjourney, Gemini, or any other AI tool works, and it does not need to be production-ready. Send the image as it is. We redraw it into production-ready art for the patch type and size you choose. Once your order is started, a Digital Mockup is included, with unlimited mockup revisions.
Will my patch look exactly like my AI image?+
Not pixel for pixel. Thread and molded rubber are built from a handful of solid colors, so glow, soft shading, and tiny texture are usually simplified into clean shapes. Printed patches and UV printed PVC keep much more of the original look. Your Digital Mockup shows what we plan to make, and you can revise the mockup as many times as you need.
Do you charge to clean up AI artwork?+
No. Artwork setup, including redrawing an AI image and rebuilding its lettering, is included in the per-patch price. There is no setup fee.
Can a patch have gradients like my AI image?+
On embroidered and standard PVC patches, gradients usually become a few solid tones that suggest the shading. Woven can hold subtle blends. If smooth gradients are essential to the design, UV printed PVC and printed (dye-sublimated) patches reproduce them.
What file should I export from my AI tool?+
The largest original download the tool gives you, usually a PNG. Avoid screenshots and copies that have been sent through a messaging app, which lose quality. You do not need a vector file, because we redraw the art either way.
Can I use an AI-generated design as my logo?+
Often, yes, with a few things to know. Under current US Copyright Office guidance, images generated by AI from a prompt alone are generally not protected by copyright, though your own creative contributions may be. A logo used to identify your business may still be able to work as a trademark, depending on how it is used. Check that the design does not resemble an existing logo or character. The rules are still developing, so treat this as general information, not legal advice.
