Ask the AI for flat artwork, not a picture of a patch: one simple subject, bold outlines, a few solid colors, a plain background, and no text. Leave out words like photorealistic, 3D, glow, gradient, and intricate. It does not need to be production-ready: send us the image with your exact wording, and we turn it into production art, with artwork setup included.
The patch prompt formula
A good patch prompt does two jobs. It describes the design, and it tells the AI what to leave out. Fill in the brackets:
A [shape] patch design of [one main subject]. Flat vector illustration with bold, clean outlines and solid color fills. Limited palette of [color], [color] and [color]. No gradients, no shadows, no glow, no texture, no tiny details. Centered on a plain white background. No text.
- One main subject. A patch is often only a few inches across, so one strong idea reads better than a scene.
- A shape. Circle, shield, rectangle, or the outline of the subject itself. Custom shapes are available too.
- Flat vector style. Clean outlines and solid fills are closest to how most patches are built.
- A few named colors. As a rule of thumb, three to six colors works well for most patch designs. It is a design guideline, not a production limit, and naming the colors stops the AI inventing dozens of shades.
- A plain background, centered. It keeps the design separate from the scenery so we know exactly what goes on the patch.
- No text. AI lettering is often unreliable. Add your wording in your order notes instead.
Ready-to-copy prompts
Copy one, swap in your own subject and colors, and paste it into ChatGPT, Midjourney, Gemini, or any other image tool.
A circular patch design for a classic car club: the front of a vintage pickup truck inside a thick ring. Flat vector illustration with bold, clean outlines and solid color fills. Limited palette of red, cream and black. No gradients, no shadows, no glow, no texture, no tiny details. Centered on a plain white background. No text.
A shield-shaped patch design for a landscaping company: a single oak tree above two rolling hills. Flat vector illustration with bold, clean outlines and solid color fills. Limited palette of dark green, light green and white. No gradients, no shadows, no glow, no texture, no tiny details. Centered on a plain white background. Leave an empty banner across the bottom for text.
A round patch design for a youth soccer team mascot: a fox head facing forward with a confident expression. Flat vector illustration with bold, clean outlines and solid color fills. Limited palette of orange, black and white. No gradients, no shadows, no glow, no texture, no tiny details. Centered on a plain white background. No text.
A rectangular patch design for a charity 5K run: a running shoe with three motion lines and a rising sun behind it. Flat vector illustration with bold, clean outlines and solid color fills. Limited palette of navy, yellow and white. No gradients, no shadows, no glow, no texture, no tiny details. Centered on a plain white background. No text.
Tweak the prompt for your patch type
Add one line to the formula depending on how the patch will be made. Not sure which type suits your design? See types of custom patches.
| Patch type | Add to your prompt | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Embroidered | Thick outlines and large solid shapes. No thin lines and no small text. | Embroidery is raised thread, so bold shapes stitch cleanly and hairline detail often does not. |
| Woven | Fine lines and small details are fine. Flat solid colors, no photo shading. | Woven usually holds finer detail and smaller lettering than embroidery, but it is still built from thread colors. |
| PVC | Bold graphic style, each color area separated by a clear outline. No gradients. | Standard PVC is typically molded from separate areas of colored rubber, so each color works best as its own clean shape. |
| Printed or UV printed PVC | Full-color illustration with smooth shading is fine. Keep edges clean and the main subject large. | Printed finishes carry gradients and shading, but detail still has to read at a few inches across. |
Words that cause trouble
These words make an image look impressive on screen and harder to turn into a patch. Most of them just mean our redraw does more of the work, so swapping them for the alternative on the right gets your image closer to the finished patch.
| Leave out | What it does | Use instead |
|---|---|---|
| Photorealistic, realistic, photo | Photo-style shading and texture that is hard to reproduce in thread or molded rubber | Flat vector illustration |
| 3D, render | Fake depth, lighting, and shadows painted into the art | Flat, solid colors |
| Glow, glowing, light rays | Soft, semi-transparent light that usually becomes solid bands on thread and molded patches | Bright, solid color |
| Intricate, highly detailed | Tiny details that can be smaller than a stitch and merge or disappear | Simple, bold shapes |
| Gradient, ombre | Smooth blends that embroidered and molded PVC patches usually turn into a few solid tones | Solid color fills |
| Embroidered patch, stitched | Painted-on fake stitches and fabric texture that can hide the actual design | Flat artwork for a patch |
| Distressed, grunge, weathered | Speckles and worn texture that can turn into noise at patch size | Clean edges |
| In the style of [an artist or brand] | Output that can imitate someone else's protected work | Describe the look: bold, retro, minimal |
In Midjourney you can also steer away from these with the --no parameter, for example --no gradient, shadow, text.
It sounds backwards, but prompting for "an embroidered patch" usually makes things harder. The AI often paints fake stitches, fabric, and shadows over your design. Ask for flat artwork and tell us the patch type when you order. We build the real texture from the artwork.
Handling text in your design
AI image tools still often misspell words or invent letters. The easiest fix is to leave text out of the prompt, or ask for an empty banner where it will go, then type your exact wording in your order notes. We set it in a real typeface that matches the style.
Keep the wording short, because lettering needs room on a small patch. As a general guide, embroidered lettering reads well down to about a quarter inch tall, depending on the font and the design, and woven can usually hold finer text. Our how to design a custom patch guide covers legibility in more detail.
Refine it, then send it
- Generate a few versions. Pick the one whose idea and layout are closest, even if the details are off.
- Change one thing at a time. Ask for thicker outlines, fewer colors, a bigger subject, or a plain background. In ChatGPT you can ask in a follow-up message.
- Shrink it. Look at it at the real patch size, on your phone or printed out. If you cannot tell what it is, simplify.
- Check it is original. Make sure it does not closely resemble an existing logo, mascot, or character, and check your AI tool's terms for commercial use.
- Send the original download. Upload the largest file the tool gives you with your notes: your exact text, the finished size, the patch type, and the parts that matter most.
What happens after you send it
Your deposit starts the order. A Digital Mockup of the redrawn design is included and arrives within 24 hours, with unlimited mockup revisions. Once you approve it, we make one real patch and send you photos: your Production Proof. For embroidered and woven patches, we also provide the Pantone references used to match the thread colors. We make the rest only after you approve that proof. For the full picture of what changes on the way from AI image to patch, read how AI-generated artwork becomes a real patch.

What is a good AI prompt for a patch design?+
Ask for flat artwork, not a picture of a patch. Name one main subject and a shape, ask for a flat vector illustration with bold outlines and solid colors, name a few colors, and ask for a plain white background with no text. Then add what to leave out: gradients, shadows, glow, texture, and tiny details.
Can ChatGPT design a patch?+
ChatGPT and other AI image tools are good at getting a concept onto the screen. Describe the patch in plain sentences, then ask for changes in follow-up messages. It does not need to be production-ready. Send us the result and we redraw it into production-ready artwork for the patch type and size you choose, with artwork setup included.
Should I ask the AI for an embroidered patch?+
Usually not. Asking for an embroidered patch often makes AI tools paint fake stitches, fabric texture, and shadows over the design, which can hide the shapes we actually need. Ask for flat vector artwork instead and tell us you want it embroidered.
Why does AI get the text wrong on my patch design?+
AI image tools still often misspell words or invent letterforms. Leave the text out of the prompt, or ask for an empty banner where it will go, and type your exact wording in your order notes. We set it in a real typeface for you.
Can I use Midjourney or ChatGPT images commercially?+
Each tool sets its own terms for commercial use, and they can differ by plan, so check yours. Make sure the design does not resemble an existing logo or character, and keep in mind that copyright and trademark rules for AI images are still developing. This is general information, not legal advice.
Does my AI design need to be perfect before I send it?+
No. Your design does not need to be production-ready. Get the idea, the shapes, and the colors close, then send it. We redraw every design for production, and once your order is started a Digital Mockup is included, with unlimited mockup revisions.
